If your old generator's stopped working or you just want reliable built-in power, the QG 5500 delivers quiet, dependable performance. It runs 2 A/Cs and essentials so you can stay comfortable and enjoy camp without worrying about power.
If your old generator has worn out or you're stepping up to built-in power, this Onan QG 5500 onboard generator delivers dependable performance for the essentials that make RV life more enjoyable. It provides enough output to run two 15,000 BTU air conditioners along with your fridge, outlets, and small appliances, so you can enjoy morning coffee, charged devices, and cool air wherever you park.
If you're replacing a previous Onan QG 5500 the overall layout is very similar. Intake, exhaust, and drain locations generally align with earlier models, so major bay modifications usually aren't required. You'll still need to reconnect the fuel line, electrical wiring, and exhaust components, and minor adjustments may be necessary depending on your RV's setup. As with most onboard generators, working with an experienced installer can help ensure everything is set up correctly the first time. You can use etrailer's installer locator to find a qualified shop near you and get help with install.
After a long drive or when the weather turns wet and rainy, nobody wants to wrestle with a bulky generator. With one-touch start, automatic choke, and remote switching capability, powering up is always simple, rain or shine. All you have to do is press the power button and relax. And the built-in shutoffs handle low oil, overloads, and engine quirks automatically, so you can settle in for the night with your fridge cold, your CPAP on, and no worries about unexpected shutdowns.
This generator uses sound-dampening technology and a special muffler to help keep things peaceful. You won't have to raise your voice for campfire stories, cut conversations short, or lose sleep to engine noise. It also meets National Park Service noise guidelines, so you can experience brilliant fall foliage in the Great Smoky Mountains or glimpse the gold and violet sunset at the Grand Canyon without worrying about generator noise.
From routine oil changes to replacing the air filter, regular service is straightforward. You don't need to be a mechanic - basic tools and standard maintenance intervals are usually all it takes to keep things running reliably for years to come. And with built-in self-diagnostic capability, troubleshooting issues is quicker and easier so you can spend less time tracking down problems and more time enjoying your RV.
For many RV owners, an onboard generator quickly becomes something they rely on every trip. It allows you to manage heat, power appliances, and stay comfortable without planning around hookups. That kind of reliability matters more the longer you own your rig. If you're replacing an older unit, upgrading to more power, or adding an onboard generator for the first time, the QG 5500 supports travel that's less restricted by weather, location, or campground availability. It's an upgrade that continues to pay off over years of use.

Hi everyone. Steve here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look at our Cummins Onan Quiet Series onboard RV generator rated at 5,500 watts, runs on gasoline, and as you can see by the sticker, it is carb compliant. Now folks, whether you're replacing an old one that just finally ran out after many, many years of great service, this could be a great option for you. Or if you're going to just install one maybe on a RV camper that maybe doesn't have one already, this could be an option for you. So, first thing you wanna do is make sure the dimensions, all those kind of things are gonna match up into the compartment where you're gonna be putting it.
And also that the wattage, in this case, the 5,500 watts, will be enough to power the things that you want to power. Now this gives you an option of remote one touch starting. So that should keep your RVs air conditioner, fridge, and essentials running. Now this does use an extra quiet operation that has built in soundproofing and an enclosed muffler as well to keep it quiet. So it's very simple to take the front axis panel off.
You just simply pull towards with a little force, and then you're gonna pull straight up and out. Now, as you can see, it's got two grommets here, and then the lips in the bottom that's gonna match up and pop into place. But you can also see some of that soundproof That I was mentioning. That soundproofing goes along the whole case. And now we can see inside you can see all your access that you need, access to, whether it's the oil, the air filter, your battery hookups, your different cables, and your remote start connectors and everything that would wire up to the harness that's already on your RV or camper.
And then out the side here, you have your power wires. Those are all gonna run through a grommet here on the side, and that's how you would route 'em out. I did go ahead and take off all the four screws that are holding this front case in place just so we can get a better look at this together. So, I'm gonna go ahead and pop this back on and pop this case off so we can get a better look at the inside. So bare with me here.
All right, so now we've got that outta the way, you can see a lot better everything going on here. Again, you got your power wires that are gonna come out the side. They give you a nice long length. Over here on the side, you can't see it from your angle, but you have a fuel return and the fuel supply. That's where your gas hookups gonna be. Again, your main wire harness here, that's gonna match up to a harness on your RV or camper. And then another harness here with an inline fuse as well. You got your 30 amp breakers here, your start and stop. And again, of course, your main power connector here. Again, you could take the air filter out here for servicing. One neat thing about this is that it sits on a universal mounting tray and it has a four point vibration or vibration isolation setup. So that's gonna keep everything quiet. It's gonna keep it from rallying outta place. The muffler here is an extra quiet muffler. It's got soundproofing and the enclosed muffler underneath the case and everything means you're gonna have quieter days, quieter nights when you're running everything. This meets all national park service requirements of that max 60 decibels at 50 feet. And this muffler also comes pre equipped with a spark arrester. So again, it's safe for all national forests and campground compliances. So no modifications, you're ready to go right out of the box. I do wanna go ahead and give you an overhead look real quick the best I can. So again, that's the top down. Pretty much not much to talk about as far as how it operates. Obviously it's gonna run power to all your equipment that you need. And as far as routine oil maintenances and those kind of things, you can do that kind of stuff yourself. The service on this is pretty straightforward. All you need is some basic tools. You don't need any kind of special mechanic tools or anything. And then once again, you have access to the oil fill there on the front as far as that goes. You do get a nice set of instructions. You get four mounting bolts that are gonna help mount the four corners at the mount points that are included to the RV camper or wherever you're mounting it. Well, folks, if you don't want to tackle this yourself, you can use our dealer locator tool on our homepage etrailer.com, and we can help get you in touch with a local person or dealer in your area that can install this for you.
